Three Months Later

“H ow's our hero holding up?” Spence slaps my shoulder raw for the fourth time today. It's only nine o'clock, and he's already given me so much crap I'm afraid it'll stain my fancy tux .

“I told you to stop calling me that, dick .”

“Why's that again? We're several thousand miles from home, all is right with the universe, and you've even got a damn castle. ” He laughs, marching across the room to Cal, who shares my annoyance. “You've got yourself a wedding that'd make most princes jealous. And it's a fucking miracle, too .”

“Spare me,” I say, rolling my eyes, fixing my tie in the mirror. “We were all on this rocket ride together .”

“Yeah, and it's still uncanny as hell sometimes.” Cal looks over, a smile on his face. I think he's secretly marveling at how we almost died just a few short months ago. “You still think your asshole cousin won't crash the party today? I've seen what people do once they've whet their appetite for revenge .”

“Nah!” I practically spit it out like the sour taste it is. “Jonas is far too busy chasing his kid around. He came an inch from divorce after finding out his wife flipped on him. Asshole could use her conscience. I think – I hope – he's finally manning up. There's a chance he'll stop being such a gigantic prick and do something more important with his life than making ragtag screech metal .”

“Gotta love a man who screams himself hoarse for a living.” Spence drops into the chair next to us, a glass in his hand. He's too fast, and already a little hammered. Liquid escapes and splashes his trousers before he pulls back, swearing under his breath. “Fuck .”

I frown. “That better be water .”

“Whatever, bro. This fine Swedish vodka is so common here it might as well be. I'm celebrating early .”

Laughing, Cal yanks the glass out of his hand, shaking a finger. “You're always celebrating, Spencer. Have some respect. A man gets hitched once in his damn life, and you're up for the honor after Cade .”

Spence's eyes grow big before he looks away, grumbling more insults too muddled to hear. “You wish. I'll be the last bachelor standing at the firm, thank hell. Somebody needs to do the detective work every so often when we're getting our asses breached left and right .”

“Please, my team did plenty. You helped. We all did.” I look across to my two best friends, smoothing things over, throwing an arm around them both. “If it weren't for you boys, not only would I have lost my girl, mom's castle, and maybe my life...I'd have lost my fucking edge. I've got you to thank for keeping me straight, and making that asshole roll over like a dog .”

“Which one?” Cal raises an eyebrow .

He isn't wrong .

It's been a whirlwind ninety days since we stared death in the eye .

I spent the following week in Seattle after saving Skittle's life, without any distractions.
